24-140 26-Jun-2017 Rehoboth UMC Methodist (New) Greenwood County SC For the images that have the church building that is not Rehoboth UMC (red brick, asymmetrical façade with one truncated tower, someone in the Greenwood County Tax Assessors Office or at Blyth Funeral Home may be able to identify the building (or a short list of possibilities) for pursuit at your leisure. There is a current Rehoboth Baptist Church (2896 Key Rd, Plum Branch, SC 29845; (864) 443-5006): And there is a current Rehoboth United Methodist Church (1808 Callison Highway, Greenwood SC 29646; 864-227-8640): The changes in county lines did not convert the Methodists into Baptists, and they did not physically move the buildings and congregations. "Rehoboth" is a popular name for Protestant churches of several denominations. The derivation of "Rehoboth" is based on a well in Gerar dug by Isaac (Gen. 26:22), supposed to be in Wady er-Ruheibeh, about 20 miles south of Beersheba. Isaac gave it the name Rehoboth, which means "open spaces". Isaac's servants had dug two wells before Rehoboth and the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen. So when they dug the third well and there were no quarrels Isaac named it Rehoboth saying "Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land." Since literate English-speaking people of 18th century were quite familiar with the Bible (especially those who professed to be Presbyterians and those who admired George Whitefield, the Anglican evangelist who also traveled through the American colonies after 1740), "Rehoboth" could be a quite propitious name for a church, a community, and the "open spaces" of large land-grant tracts. Apropos to the application of "Rehoboth" to late 18th and early 19th century churches in western SC, the nearby and perhaps earlier Smyrna Presbyterian Church and Cemetery may give insight into how the settler-farmers in the area viewed themselves. The Biblical Book of Revelation (2:9-10) reads: "...I know your tribulation and your poverty...Do not fear what you are about to suffer...Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life...." Rehoboth United Methodist Church started at its current site in 1860 as the result of a gift of land from by great-great-grandfather, Robert Red Tolbert. Starting with (that) Robert Red Tolbert (the "Robert Red Tolbert" name has been recycled many times in my family), several of my ancestors have been buried in the Rehoboth United Methodist Church Cemetery. That cemetery is located behind the current brick church building. However, Rehoboth United Methodist Church had a different site prior to Robert Red Tolbert's gift of land. The original site dated from circa-1811 and was situated 2.44 miles S56.1942W from the Callison Highway and Damascus Road intersection that is in front of the current Rehoboth United Methodist Church building. The Methodist denomination in America was rent asunder by racial prejudice and political dissent throughout the 19th century. The name "United Methodist Church" results from various efforts to put the pieces back together again. These efforts to make peace among factions extended at least to 1974 and perhaps even more recently. One resource for following the evolution of the denomination is "Passionate Journey: History of the 1866 South Carolina Annual Conference" by John W. Curry, 1980; Bill Wise Printers, St. Matthews SC 29135; 121 pages. I have no information about Rehoboth Baptist Church other than its address and telephone number. Regarding the photos at http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sccgpss/SC%20- %20GREENWOOD/cemetery-jpg/24-139/ : Some of those photos have incorrect titles, and some of those photos appear to have nothing to do with either the 1811-through-1860 or 1860-to-present Rehoboth United Methodist Church (1808 Callison Highway, Greenwood SC 29646). I have reviewed the photos in the 24-139 list of images. I have added comments in an effort to correct errors where I have observed any. The current, post-1860 "Rehoboth United Methodist Church and Cemetery" (RUMC) is located at 1808 Callison Highway, Greenwood SC 29646, at the intersection of Callison Highway and Phoenix Road; i.e., N34.0833 W82.1341. The site of the original (1811-1860) "Rehoboth Methodist Church (site) and its cemetery" (ORMC) is in a wooded location that is 2.44 miles S56.1942W from the current Rehoboth UMC; i.e., it is at N34.0627o W82.1668o. I have some additional pictures of the ORMC and RUMC cemeteries, but I hesitate to mix them with the ones in the table above, lest the sorting and correcting process confuse their documentation. I shall endeavor to get these additional images posted separately. Kindest regards, Thomas W. Tolbert, PhD 1823 Apple Tree Lane Fort Mill SC 29716-9791 803-548-5605 tomtolbert@comporium.net
